June 30 - July 4

June 30 - July 4

Yellowstone

Jamye and I began a 4-week break from the Lewis and Clark Trail with several planned adventures in Montana, Wyoming and New York. The first week began at Yellowstone. Jamye and I camped at different campgrounds at Yellowstone, exploring, hiking, mountain bike riding and participating in the West Yellowstone 4th of July parade. Before arriving at Yellowstone, we spent a night in Ennis, MT, getting plans finalized for the visit of our daughter Emily, son-in-law Dan and Granddaughter Amelia from July 19-25. On July 2, Jamye and I hiked to an observation point above Old Faithful to watch her erupt within ten minutes of the time predicted. Because of the prevailing winds, we saw mostly steam but it was still special being part of the moment. That evening at Grant campground, we met a wonderful family from Canby, Oregon, Joel and Amy Sebastian and their two sons, Ben and Isaac. They were on a combined family vacation and soccer tournament for their eldest son, Ben, who is 14. Joel is a middle school principal and Amy is a teacher. We hope to get another visit with them when we arrive in the Portland area. On July 3, Jamye and I went on a mountain bike ride on the Rendezvous Ski Trail, a training ground for the US biathlon team. In the summer, the trail is opened for mountain bikers. On July 4, I rode in my first parade! A West Yellowstone store, Free Heel and Wheel (a bike and ski shop) invited me to participate in the 4th of July parade. I had a great time, throwing candy to the little ones and waving Happy 4th to all. Jamye and I saw a great fireworks show that night.
